I’ve found that creating a morning routine for myself and sticking to it has really improved my mood and kept me feeling good all day. In fact, many successful millionaires and entrepreneurs credit much of their success to their daily morning routine.

Oprah says her 6 a.m. wake up time and morning routine sets the tone for a productive start to the day. Motivational speaker, Tony Robbins calls his morning routine his “Hour of Power.” He takes an hour to himself every day to move and breathe, express gratitude, and repeat positive affirmations.

This saying really resonates with me, because I usually snooze my alarm in the morning and rush to get ready for work feeling frazzled and overwhelmed.

Now, that I have changed that horrible habit I have noticed that my mornings are more peaceful. I’ve even started to look forward to mornings, which is a huge change for me being a chronic insomniac and night owl.

What is a morning routine?

Before I give you my suggestions, let me explain what exactly a morning routine is. A morning routine is pretty self-explanatory. It’s steps one takes or daily habits to do every morning. And, if you think about it everyone has a morning routine already. In the morning people brush their teeth, floss, wash their face, take a shower (I hope), get dressed, drink coffee, eat breakfast, get ready for work, etc. But, what about the other things you can do in the morning to help jumpstart your day?

How to start a morning routine?

Start a morning routine by figuring out what you want out of the day. Try to incorporate things that are simple and practical yet, helpful. When creating a morning routine make it make sense to you and your lifestyle. Don’t just look at the morning routine of successful people and mimic that, just because. If you are thinking about creating a morning routine to be more positive than maybe include gratitude or meditation.

Creating and sticking to a morning routine has really improved my life. My morning routine has helped me become more disciplined and it has changed my life in more ways than one. Since I’ve consistently practiced having a positive morning routine, I have been feeling more energized throughout my day. This is simply because I am taking time for myself, before rising to the demands of my day. In a sense, having a morning routine has given me more control.

Tips for creating a successful and consistent morning routine

1-Don’t overthink it

Your morning routine should be something simple, so you can realistically stick to it. There’s no point in creating a 20-step routine if you won’t get half of the things you would like to get done on a regular basis. This will only leave you feeling overwhelmed and you’ll probably give up prematurely.

2-Tailor your morning routine to your lifestyle

It’s easy to get intimidated by hearing how other people are spending their mornings. You know, those people. The ones waking up at 5 a.m. to run a few miles before work or meditating for an hour before getting ready for the day. If you’re more like me who’s likely to hit snooze three times before dragging yourself out of bed, think about what you CAN do realistically.

Your morning routine can be as short as 10 minutes or as long as three hours…it’s all about what works for you and your lifestyle. All that matters is that your morning routine is something you can commit to and be consistent with. And, if you really really don’t have time start off small and add things to your routine slowly.

Can you commit to making your bed every morning?

How about saying a 30-second prayer or setting an intention before walking out of the door?

Do you have five minutes to spare for journaling before heading to the bathroom?

3-Habit Stack

Making new habits can be really tricky. Scientists say it takes 21-days to form a new habit and it can take months to break an old one…yikes. But, what if you could hack your brains into doing this faster? That’s where habit stacking comes in.

Habit stacking is a routine building strategy that consists of grouping small tasks together and linking them to an old habit. This then helps you create new habits.

For example, let’s say you are already in the habit of making your bed every morning, but you want to start meditating. So, you link the two tasks together by meditating immediately after making your bed in the morning. Now, making up your bed and meditating are two habits you’ve grouped together or stacked.

5 Easy Morning Routine Ideas that Will Keep You in a Great Mood All Day Long

1-Practice gratitude

I always make sure I show gratitude every morning. Since I started incorporating this into my routine, I have felt more positive and have appreciated my loved ones more. While I make my bed, I normally say a short prayer of thanks and list three things that I can think of that I am grateful for. This is quick and easy and only takes a minute to do, but it has really helped me maintain a positive outlook.

Another idea is to list what you are grateful for in a notebook to remind yourself of the abundance in your life. Or, you can use a gratitude journal like this one to write about what you are thankful for set daily intentions.

2-Write morning pages/journal

In her classic book on creative recovery, “The Artists Way,” Julia Cameron suggests writing “morning pages” every morning. The morning pages are three pages of stream of consciousness writing in the morning. Cameron says committing to daily morning pages will help prioritize and synchronize the day.

Writing out your thoughts is an amazing way to process your feelings and helps to get them out so they don’t stay with oyu throughout the day.

Developing a solid and consistent morning routine can really change the way you approach mornings. Whether you are trying to attract success and abundance into your life or just simply want to be happier, a morning routine can really help you get there.

3-Drink water

While you sleep your body and mind are healing and restoring itself. And, not drinking water for hours on end can really leave you dehydrated. Staying hydrated is essential to maintaining good health.

Drinking water upon waking up helps cleanse your bowels and really gets things moving. This is why if you drink water on an empty stomach you may feel an urge to move your bowels. This helps aid in digestion and flushes toxins out of your body. Plus, drinking water first thing in the morning can really help you jumpstart your day and get those ounces in.

4-Listen to motivational speeches and/or good music

Sometimes you just wake up happy feeling like you can walk on water and other days…meh. But, when you’re just not feeling it simply listening to something positive can really bring you out of a funk.

When I want to have a productive day, but can barely muster up the energy to put on “real” clothes tune into motivational speeches. This really whips me into shape and gets me pumped for my day.

If I just want to raise my vibes, I’ll listen to meditation music or upbeat songs by an artist that I love. Just jamming to a song while getting ready in the morning can change your mood.

5-Meditate

There are so many benefits to meditation like self-awareness, mental clarity, and stress relief. Meditation can calm you when you are feeling angry or anxious and settle you down when you are overwhelmed.

Who wouldn’t want to start their day with some peace? What better way to boost your mood?
